The one-line description under Better Man on the band's own page reads, in full, "Congrat-u-fucking-lations." That is the song. Megan Loveless, who wrote it, plays a narrator raising a glass to an ex who has moved on to a man, and spends the verses guessing at his virtues: he probably catches the bugs, probably kisses better, probably has money, probably stands taller, probably charms her mother. Every line is a bet rather than a fact, and that is the trick of it. The narrator has no access to the new life, only a picture assembled from insecurity, and the wager form lets the bitterness sound like manners right up until it doesn't. The turn comes late, when the guessing stops and the memory starts, and the song admits it would rather she be happy anyway. It is a classic country breakup song with a second charge in the mouth of a queer woman: the rival isn't just better, he's a man, and the song never says what that costs.
The Devil Said Jump are Loveless and Emily Franke, a two-woman Americana band from Chicago who work fast and mostly alone. The debut Renaissance Man arrived in December 2023, written, produced and performed by the two of them, mixed and mastered by Loveless. A two-song single followed in February 2024, then a pair of singles that autumn, Ruined and Bedrock, which brought in Ben Pavlik on lead guitar and Greg Artry on drums and put some grit under the harmonies. All Shook Up, sixteen songs recorded and produced by the band themselves, landed in November 2024, two weeks before a Christmas single called Ain't That Living?. That is a lot of songs in eleven months, and the volume is the point: the diary is kept in real time.
The temperature rose in 2025. Make Me Buy A Gun, released on the Fourth of July with Jonathan Hodges of Bomethius on violin, is a protest song in which a pacifist narrator talks herself toward self-defence, and the band's notes on it name their enemies without euphemism. Then, four months later, Better Man, which has no politics in it at all except the ones that come with being who they are. A session cut at Friends of Friends Studio in Chicago in November 2025 and released the following Valentine's Day pairs Make Me Buy A Gun with older material, She's My Man among it, in arrangements thickened by Jenna Garcia's violin, Adela Skowronski's cello and Ethan Bouwsma's drums.
Queer country has spent a decade arguing that the form was always big enough to hold it. The Devil Said Jump don't argue; they write the songs and let the pronouns land where they land. Better Man works because it could have been written fifty years ago, and because it couldn't.
